A roof leak can cause serious damage to your home, but not if you catch it quickly.
Living with a roof leak is stressful, mostly due to the fact that when you fix one promptly, most of the damage can be avoided. Not everyone knows how to spot those little signs that it’s happening, however.
Today, we’re going to fix that by telling you 4 of the major signs of roof leak. When you notice one of these things, it’s important not to idle. If you do, you could be spending thousands on leaking roof repair.
In This Post:
1. Water Stains on Ceilings
If you suspect that your roof might be leaking, generally all you have to do is look up. At a certain point, the water will start to come through to your ceiling and leave a dark water stain.
It’ll look as though there’s a puddle on your ceiling, but with a brown ring around it. If the leak has gotten to the point where it’s creating stains on your ceiling, then you need to call in a professional as soon as possible to examine your roof.
2. You Notice Dripping
Likewise, there’s no more obvious tell of a roof leak than having water literally dripping through your ceiling. Although a stain will usually come along with it, a drip can happen without one and it could mean anything from an ice dam to a large scale leak.
Even if the dripping comes and goes, you need to do a proper investigation to ensure that it’s not a huge problem.
3. Missing Shingles & Debris
It’s good practice to take a walk around your house from time to time and check the roof for missing shingles, curled shingles, sagging and clogged gutters, or damaged flashing. Any of these things can be the root cause of a bad leak and just because there aren’t signs of leaking on your interior doesn’t mean that they aren’t coming soon.
If you let this go for too long, a small leak will be the least of your worries. Mold treatment and roof replacement are in your future. Read on here to learn more about affordable roof replacement.
4. Mold
Speaking of mold, that’s a telltale sign that there’s too much moisture in your home. The problem with mold is that it can go undetected for a long time until it’s a real health concern. It can also deteriorate your walls over a period of time.
You’ll know mold by the way it looks and smells. If it’s growing in your walls or above your ceiling, you may notice yourself coughing and sneezing more for no apparent reason. Get a mold test done quickly when you start to notice water stains or a musky smell in your house.
Act Fast When You See Signs Of Roof Leak
When any of these signs of roof leak appear, you need to act fast. The longer you let a leak fester, the more damaging and thus, the more expensive it’s going to be to get repaired. In the worst circumstance, you’ll need a roof replacement.
In most circumstances, you can fix a leak with proper roof maintenance. Take care of your roof and it’ll take care of you.
