If you’re trying to live a more environmentally friendly life, then you know how much effort you need to put into things like research and lifestyle changes. That being said, have you ever really looked at what you could do in order to stay ahead of issues in this manner? Are there ways to figure out what is going to work and how long may it take to get things worked out?

Reusable bags are a solid option to consider when you’re trying to live a eco-friendlier lifestyle. How do you know if those bags are eco-friendly? Here are some of the things that you need to look for.

1. How Are the Bags Made for Home Usage?

The process of making these bags can give us a hint as to how eco-friendly they are. The big culprit here is the paper bag. During the process of actually making these bags, you will find that paper bags take a lot more energy and water than plastic to actually sort out and make. And, on top of that, trees are usually utilized in the production of paper bags, which also makes them less environmentally friendly.

2. Organic or Not?

Many of us turn to organic products because we falsely believe that they are better quality and/or better for the environment. The fact of the matter is, not all organic products provide that sort of security. Cotton, non-woven bags are just fine – but organic cotton bags end up being problematic for the environment. Organic cotton has around 30% lower of a yield rate than standard cotton. So, that means that farmers have to use 30% more resources – including water and electricity – in order to get the same yield as a farmer that is not using organic options. So, in some cases, you want to avoid organic.

3. How Often Do You Plan On Using It?

Lastly, you want to be sure that you are actually going to use the bags. A lot of people will buy reusable bags and then forget about them. In those cases, you’re really not making that much of a difference. But, if you’re using these bags all of the time, then you will find that it makes an even bigger impact on the environment. Once again, organic cotton isn’t a great consideration here. It’s estimated that you would need to use an organic cotton bag hundreds, even thousands of times for it to have less of an environmental impact than a plastic bag. So, you’re often better off getting bags made from recycled materials.

Search around on the web and learn as much as possible about the processes at hand. More often than not, you will have a lot of options and you can learn exactly what may come of everything that you’re doing. Look at the big picture, learn as much as possible, and know that you’re doing what is best when buying reusable bags.
