There are many reasons for a person to be tired all day. Maybe you drink too much coffee in the morning. Maybe there is an underlying cause, such as a sleep disorder. But maybe, your bedroom is the root of these issues.
Believe it or not, the physical bedroom environment can affect how you sleep. Many factors go into keeping a bedroom as relaxed and peaceful as it should be. Look at the list below for a few tips on how to make your bedroom perfect for sleeping!
In This Post:
1: Temperature
The temperature of a bedroom is important. Being too hot or too cold can wake you up from your sleep, and it can be difficult to get back to sleep once awake! This could also lead to stress, preventing you from sleeping even more!
Many people find that keeping the room between 60 and 70 degrees is a “sweet spot” for sleeping. Find the temperature that works for you! If you are sleeping with a partner, and you two like different temperatures, try adding or removing a blanket. This way, you are both happy!
2: Move Your Clock
If you wake up in the middle of the night, you likely look to see what time it is. Then, you probably think something like “Wow, it’s so late! I should be asleep, but I can’t get back to sleep” which only proceeds to stress you out.
Moving your clock to a piece of furniture not directly next to your bed will make your life less stressful if you wake up in the middle of the night. If you cannot move the clock, try setting your alarm and then facing the clock away from your bed.
3: Darkness And Quietness
The darker your room is the better your sleep will be. Make sure you close your blinds and turn out all of the lights. If you are the type of person who needs their cell phone on at all times, make sure that you put it in a drawer or turn it face-down, so artificial light from your phone’s notifications won’t keep waking you up.
You may be living in a place where the outside environment will be noisy. Fans and white noise machines are helpful for blocking out excess noise. If you must keep your phone on, place it on silent. Or, if you can, shut your phone off entirely!
4: Create A Peaceful Space
We all have our hobbies, and most of us hang pictures and photographs of our hobbies in our bedroom. Try keeping the pictures you have peaceful. While you may be a huge fan of wrestling, forego staring into a wrestler’s eyes and instead, post photos of a beach, forest, or some other serene scene.
Also, try to avoid having clutter around your bedroom. Purchasing a nightstand with drawers will allow you easy access to important items without having to look at a messy bedroom.
5: Do Not Work
Your bedroom is for sleeping, relaxing, and unwinding. It is not for doing work! If you work from home, do not do it in the bedroom.
Due to the size of your living space, that may not be possible to do for everyone. If you need to do work in your bedroom, do not do it on your bed.
6: Lavender
A study conducted in 2012 found that the scent of lavender could decrease heart rate, blood pressure, and skin temperature, putting you into a more relaxed state. Another study discussed in the International Journal of Neuroscience found that lavender can improve your mood while making you feel sleepy.
Try washing your sheets in lavender-scented detergent. If you are comfortable with it, you may even want to light a candle that smells like lavender.
7: Make Your Bed
This isn’t just something your mom told you – a poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation revealed that making your bed with a good mattress more often made people sleep better. Making your bed is also good for keeping things clean, and keeping the shape of your pillows, sheets, and linens.
Keeping your bedroom dark, quiet, and a comfortable temperature will make it so you sleep like a baby! Hiding your alarm clock will work wonders, as will filling your room with the scent of lavender. Make sure you get into the habit of not doing work in your bedroom, either. Finally, keeping your bedroom clean and making your bed every morning when you wake up has any great benefits.
A method to keep your room clean that was not mentioned, though should be stated, is to make sure that you have comfortable pillows, sheets, mattresses, and others. If you need to purchase those things, SleepStandards.com has great review on bedding.
