Moving into a house provides you with a unique opportunity. For perhaps the only time before you move out, there’s nothing in the house. This can be a fun opportunity if you’re moving in a hurry, and end up camping with your kids in the living room.
If you have time before your move, though, you can take advantage of the opportunity to do a thorough cleaning. Here are a few things to consider:
In This Post:
Clean the Carpets
Cleaning carpets can be a pain. You have to take all your furniture out of the room, and find somewhere to put it for a couple hours. If your carpet extends over multiple rooms, you’re in for even more of a headache. You don’t want to leave a line anywhere, so you’ll have to clear out the entire carpet.
Why not put that day off as long as possible? Before you move in, you’ll have a chance to run a carpet shampooer without any of the accompanying trouble. Take advantage of this time. You’ll thank yourself a few years down the road.
Check the Refrigerator
We’re not saying everyone leaves food in the fridge when they move out. We’re just saying it happens often enough that you may want to check. This is even more important if you’ve bought a vacant house, particularly if the power has been shut off.
Even if no food was left behind, residual moisture may have allowed mold to grow. If you do have this problem, you’ll want to know as soon as possible, so you can do something about it. The last thing you want to deal with on your first night in the new house is an emergency fridge cleaning.
Clean the Rest of the Kitchen
Be honest with yourself. For the first week after moving in, you’re probably going to be too busy to do much cleaning. If there’s one you want to be as clean as possible, it’s the place where you make your food.
A good oven cleaning is easy, and you can set it to be done automatically while you’re taking care of the rest of the room. Cupboards are another place you should pay particular attention to, since the insides are much easier clean before they’re full of dishes and dried goods. It’s a good idea to disinfect the sink with a cleaning solution, too. There’s no knowing when it was last cleaned.
Hire a Professional
Moving is stressful under the best of circumstances. Legal paperwork, truck rentals and inspections can take a big bite out of your time. If you’d rather not deal with the hassle of cleaning on top of your other demands, you may want to hire a professional.
Among house cleaning services Simply Maid is one of the best. They hire only experienced, background-checked cleaners who know what they’re doing. That’s less time you’ll spend cleaning, and more time you can spend making sure the movers put the boxes in the right rooms.
