Every year, about 40 million Americans make at least one move.

Whether you’re relocating to a new city for a great job opportunity or simply upgrading your starter home to the house of your dreams, moving can be fun and also a bit stressful.

However, it doesn’t have to cause emotional or financial upheaval. If you do it right, you might even be able to enjoy the experience.

Here’s a simple checklist of the top five things you need to do when moving to a new house.

Enjoy Moving to a New House

First thing’s first: enjoy the experience! You’re moving! Enjoy it and take advantage of the move as a way to start fresh. This means trying not to get too stressed out about what you need to do in order to ensure the new house is all set up.

Get organized before you move everything, clean up any clutter and ask for help from family and friends. Our team of accredited removalists will have all your furniture and possessions moved into your new home with care and precision.

Write Up a New Home Checklist

If it helps you feel less stressed (or even if it doesn’t), it’s recommended to write out a checklist for moving into a new house.

Things you’ll want to put on this checklist include:

  • Setting up utilities to the new home
  • Changing the locks
  • Changing your mailing address
  • Ensuring you have WiFi when you move in
  • Designing a comprehensive packing plan
  • Throwing out old furniture and clothing you don’t need

The last item on the list is important, as moving is a great time to donate or get rid of old clothing, toys, and other items that are causing clutter. Speaking of getting rid of clutter…

Have a Garage Sale

If your new home has less space or you simply want to make room for new furniture, having a moving garage sale is a great way to go “out with the old and in with the new.” As an added plus, this is a great way to make extra cash for the move.

Don’t worry if you can’t get rid of everything you want to before the big move. You can rent a portable storage space in the meantime. Or, simply look into portable storage as a way to help make the move easier in general.

Complete a Home Inspection

Even if your realtor or leasing agent has provided you with a new home inspection, it’s smart to conduct your own, too. While you might have done this before closing on the home, it’s best to check again before moving in.

Go through the house and check for plumbing leaks or cracks in the foundation. Make sure all gates and doors are secure and familiarize yourself with the breaker box.

Make The New House a Home

You made it! Now, it’s time to enjoy your new living space.

Moving to a new house is fun once you realize that you get to make it a home.

Take your time unpacking. Get a feel for the new layout and figure out how you want to decorate it according to the way the light hits the bed in the afternoon or how the kitchen smells when you’re cooking with family.
